The Mummy Range was called the "White Owls" by the Arapahos, because of their perception that the snow lying on the peaks there seemed more white than on the surrounding ranges. However, the white man had to invent his own name, and thus because the range resembles an Egyptian Mummy on its back, it was named the Mummy Range. William Hallett and the artist, Bierstadt, are given credit for naming it. The head is at Hagues Peak, and Fairchild, the drawn up knees.
Naming mountains this way resembles naming constellations. Some of the names in the range include, Mummy Mountain, Fairchild Mountain, Hagues Peak, Mount Dunraven, Ypsilon Peak, Mount Chiquita, Mount Chapin, and Rowe Mountain. Hagues Peak, at 13,560', is the tallest.
Lawn Lake, the source of the 1982 flood that killed three campers and did so much damage to Horseshoe Park and Estes Park, is located here beneath Mummy Mountain.
